Saddam Hussein is a very bad man, an evil man and the Iraqi courts have just sentanced him to death by hanging, but I don't think this will happen, and I think that on appeal he'll get a life sentance. Well hey that's just my opinion.
Now I'm going to play devil's advocate here and say that I don't think he should be killed. Yes he has commited the worst kind of attrocities possible, and is surely in the big leagues with Hitler et al in what he has done, and what has been done under his regime, but I'm still not comfortable with capital punishment. Some people may call me a coward and will say that he does deserve to die, and yes I do think that he deserves to die, but not by our hand or anyone others.

It is a hard situation to be in because whilst he is still alive then he will still be a leader to those that still support him, and if he is killed then he will become a martyr.

Understand your drawbacks on capital punishment. Its too ancient, Hammurabi's law type of a punishment. Then again, what else do you do with someone who is at the level of Saddam Hussein?
As for a sentence between the death penalty and life in prison... How about cryogenically frozen? Freeze him for 50 years, de-thaw him, and then have a prepared decision on what to do with him. With current medical technology, he'd probably end up a mindless vegetable at defrost... but still.
I'm happy I don't have to make the decisions, but I will probably disagree with whatever they decide.

I am not happy about capital punishment, either, but he will be hanged. The Americans will want nothing less.
I wouldn't have him killed either. I don't see the point of that in a civilised society - the days of an "eye for an eye" are surely way behind us.

There is a path between life and death and that's torture but that's ever wronger.
Interesting how the trial picked out -out of all the hideous things he did- about the only thing that wouldn't implicate the Americans as well. Lets not forget that he tortured and murdered on a massive scale for decades with the full backing of the West...
Agree with Pynchon, he will almost certainly hang. Mind you, today's election result may change that.
